Breathe

The trauma wasn’t over.

Ember woke to a stick snapping outside her window, and she sat up quickly, peering out of the shallow glass.

A shadow stood in her backyard, it was completely black, but she could tell it was staring up through her window, eyeing her carefully.

Heart pounding, she scrambled off the bed, pressing her hand to different sections of her nightstand.

She caught a hold of her phone, hands shaking as she typed in the passcode.

Her home screen flashed before her eyes and her trembling thumb clicked her contacts, and she pressed her phone to her ear, breathing shallowly.

The line rang for a couple of seconds, the sound burning her ears, then it clicked. “Hello?”

“Max?” she whispered quietly.

Despite the late call, he didn’t sound exhausted in the slightest. “It’s one in the morning, Angel. Why aren’t you in bed?”

The sound of the beeping of a register and the crowd in the background told her he was at a store of some kind.

She heard the front door open, and like an instinct, she silently ran to her closet, searching for the handle. When she found it, she opened the door, stepped in, and closed it in front of her.

“Angel, what’s wrong?” Max pressed.

Sitting on the floor, Ember pulled her legs to her chest, trying to hold herself so she wouldn’t give out her location with the sobs edging up her throat.

“Max...” she whispered, “there’s someone... in our house....”

There was a brief silence, then his voice came out stern. “Stay on the phone with me. I’ll be there in two minutes.”

“Okay.”

She heard the hall closet door open downstairs, whoever that person was, they were searching for her. She let out a quiet whimper, holding herself tighter.

“I want you to listen to my voice, Angel,” Max said softly. “You’re going to be okay. I’ll be there soon, alright?”

“Okay,” she whispered.

On Max’s side of the line, she heard his the doors of the store squeaking closed and his footsteps cascaded on the cement as he walked to their house.

“Angel,” Max said, breathless as if he was running, “I need you to—” His voice cut off.

“Max?” Ember panicked at his silence, hoping he would come back.

She took her phone from her ear and looked down, seeing her screen drained to black.

“No, no, no, no!” She tapped the screen, pressed the buttons, hoping it would turn on, but her phone was dead. She had forgotten to charge it. “No...” she was on the verge of tears, “please, no... Not again.”

She heard silence for a while, then footsteps echoed through the house as someone walked up the stairs. She hugged herself as her door opened, telling herself to breathe as the person stepped into the room, closing the door behind them.

Through the crack of the closet, she saw it examine the room for her. Then it peered under her desk, leaning back up, and it picked up a hairbrush from the nightstand, eyeing it thoughtfully before stepping over to her bookshelf and peering behind it.

It looked around the room, the moonlight casting its pitch-black shadow on the wooden floor.
